'An incredible player': Munster 'lucky' to have Snyman

REACTION: Munster star Tadgh Beirne says his team is ‘really lucky” to have someone like Rudolph Snyman in their squad.

The Bok lock, who has struggled with injuries over the last couple of seasons, played a key role in Munster’s 19-14 win over the Stormers in the United Rugby Championship Final over the weekend.

The Irish side lost their captain Peter O’Mahony to concussion seven minutes before half-time, which allowed Snyman to enter the game.

Beirne moved to the back row with Snyman forming a second-row combination with Jean Kleyn.

Snyman was a towering figure in the line-outs and mauls in the second half and he was strong on defence as well.

There is even a video circulating on social media of him snatching the ball with one hand in one of those second-half-line-outs.

“He is unbelievable to have around the squad,” said Beirne

“For a man who has been so unlucky with injuries, he’s one of the most positive people I’ve ever come across.”

“Since he’s returned, he’s brought a lot to the mix with his experience and a physicality that is second to none.

“He’s world-class, and we’re really lucky to have someone like that in our squad.

“He’s not just an incredible player, but an incredible person too.”

With Snyman in the pack, Munster also showed enough strength to nullify the Stormers’ maul in the closing stages to secure the win.

“We kept saying that we just needed to stick to the plan,” Beirne explained.

“It was an incredible display against a team like the Stormers, as the maul is one of their strongest assets.”

Snyman was included in a 33-man Springbok squad for a training camp in Durban this week.
